Vedle samotné projekce a jejího štěpení různě umístěnými projekčními plochami dochází k metaforickým variacím pohledu a zážitku zpoza plátna.

Most of the works by Filip Cenek do not have a permanent form, though they may be based on the same photographs, videos, animations or a unifying literary fragment. Experienced both on the part of the artist and the visitors, the alienation effect is further supported by the unique installation of the artworks in relation to the “finite” space. In such cases, the process of the visitors’ perception and experience is similar to that of a repeated reading of the same text. In accordance with the artist’s intention, some works seem to never start and never stop. A similar quality of a varied perspective of the resulting artwork can be found in Cenek’s co-operation with other artists. The double perspective of the content as well as the reflection of non-linear plot layers composed out of photographs and title images mostly result from his encounters with Tereza Sochorová.

The artworks are based on sequences of photographs (slides). An exhibition of these photographs as well as their projection in random order both represent individual artworks, in some cases even single traces of the possible existence of these works. The projection occurs in various asynchronous and infinite loops. That is what makes repeated projections like those in classic film impossible and frequently it is not even possible to create an identical installation like in case of an object (sculpture); which makes it impossible to identify these works with the background of traditional media. What the artworks by Filip Cenek approximate most are the definitions and theories of the moving image. The subject of the work includes not just the image but also its position in space and the form of its presentation. The sequence of images occurs in various forms, underlying to the transformation of the articulation of the narrative by means of the dissolving images of photographs and titles. An emphasis is put on pauses, which are defined by the brief character of the artworks, information fragments, repetitions and observational texts (verses). The presence of darkness during longer pauses between images and words creates a new space for random encounters: of image and text, of image and image, of darkness and text, of darkness.

These installations make an indirect commentary on the classic composition of projection spaces in the cinema or the black box. Besides the very projection and its fragmentation by means of the individual projection spaces and their varied positioning in space, they also produce metaphoric variations of the perspective and experience from behind the screen. The space solution provides not only the possibility of movement but also the changing perspective of the dissolving structure of the projected images. Thus the non-linearity of the plot consists not only in the loops of photographic sequences and in their random dissolving with the “text images” but also in the space solution of similar artworks. In general, dissolving represents a principle of editing. In case of Filip Cenek, the “dissolve” becomes a symbolical part of authorship and creativity, with one of the images or text images gradually dissolving, while a new one appears (“dissolve”/“double exposition”). However, in contrast to a one-time overlapping of two images in film, Filip Cenek employs both the random recurrence and total drop-out of the image, working with darkness and expectation within the space defined by the artist.

The employed methods and creative approaches deny the formalist singularity of the given medium (film, video, photograph, sculpture). Composed out of photographs and texts, the moving images function as retrospective echoes of the content of the installation in the given space. While such works are naturally called sculptures, photographs, installations, videos and animations, it is only natural for the artists to become photographers, sculptors, filmmakers and, at the same time, curators of their own works.
