Jozef Cseres: Rozjímání nad koberci a záclonami

Koberce a záclony. Zkrátka roviny: horizontální a vertikální. Recyklační strategie VJ Věry Lukášové (Filip Cenek) odhrnuje záclonu zleva doprava a v mechanických posunech přibližuje našemu vidění svět za ní. Prostřednictvím kaleidoskopických manipulací de-formuje úhly pohledu a skládá z nich prchavé slepeniny počitků. „V jakých plánech a posloupnostech se odehrává naše vnímání?“ ptá se nezúčastněná kamera. Celistvé technické obrazy, reprezentující důvěrně známou předmětnou realitu, se rázem rozpadají na neidentifikovatelné struktury, jejichž dynamické tvary na ní odkazují zcela arbitrárně. Nové roviny a plány v nových úhlech pohledu.

Palackého zvukový komentář dovypráví to, co manipulovaný proud obrazů zamlžuje. Jeho moc ovšem sahá za rámec reflexe. Zanícením a zkušeností vybroušeným citem pro zvukové detaily znovu animuje rozpadlou vizuální naraci. Slepuje a zřetězuje časové události, jež ustrnuly v amorfním časoprostoru. Pulsace napříč hudbou a světem nejsou měřitelná opakování stejného, nýbrž ametrické rytmy neměřitelného a nerovnoměrného. Hudební refrény mají posvátné vztahy s teritorii a svou podstatou připomínají ptačí zpěvy. Hudba lidí je forma stávání a její deteritorializace je jenom jedním z projevů všeobecného procesu pronikajícího napříč vesmírem.

Hudebník Palacký vstupuje do digitální krajiny dekomponované výtvarníkem Cenkem s úmyslem deteritorializovat v ní refrény. To ona zplodila estetiku omylů a chyb. V českých uměleckých intermédiích a multimediích bývá vyvážená úroveň řešení vztahu mezi zvukem a obrazem ještě stále spíš výjimečná, nemluvě o vhodném kontextu, do kterého se ona syntéze rodí. Koberce a záclony Ivana Palackého a Filipa Cenka (nebo VJ Věry Lukášové, když jinak nedá) jsou tou výjimkou, jež si rozhodně zaslouží, aby nezůstala jediná.

Jozef Cseres: Thoughts on carpets and curtains

Carpets and curtains. Simple planes: horizontal and vertical. Divided and joined by an angle, usually of ninety degrees. But now, even that is no longer certain. A grassy carpet is waving, it opens up and human figures emerge from it, behind/before the window of an aquarium/train we fall prey to deconstructed reality and we are perceptually unable to grasp it in a more stable plane of angle of view. It escapes us like a medusa, yet there are intersections in which seemingly incompatible phenomena can meet, as happens in the five pieces on the new DVD “Carpets Curtains” by the duo Ivan Palacký & VJ Věra Lukášová (Errant Bodies, USA/Denmark, 2006). The recycling strategy of VJ Věra Lukášová (Filip Cenek) unveils the curtain from left to right and with mechanical pulls brings the world behind it closer to our view. Through kaleidoscopic manipulations the angles of view are de-formed and assembled into fleeting conglomerations of sensations. “In what planes and successions does our perception take place?” asks the indifferent camera. Complete technical images, representing the familiar reality of objects, are shattered in a split second into unidentifiable structures, whose dynamic shapes refer to it only arbitrarily. More new levels and planes in new angles of view. Yet, even the multiple views are merely a transient state in a world where only instability is stable.

Palacký’s commentary of sound clarifies what the manipulated stream of images fogs. Its power, however, reaches beyond reflection. With passion and a feel, honed by experience, for sound details it reanimates the shattered visual narrative. It glues together and chains time events stuck in an amorphous time-space vortex. The audiomover establishes a new order; its vibrating sonic motifs put structure and rhythm into chaos, which had itself been order before (the pitfalls of technologically represented, manipulated or simulated reality). By introducing motifs (Deleuze and Guattari would call them refrains) the musician returns the once lost face to the world. The rhythmic work assigns a time track to the fragments of images and texts, arranges them following the rules of timing. The rhythms bring up milieus that emerge from the chaos – “blocks of space-time constituted by a periodic repetition of a component”, as they were characterized by Deleuze and Guattari. Those who read attentively their A Thousand Plateaus, would have noticed that rhythms are actually a response of the milieu to chaos and as such they cannot be identified with metric organization, which is dogmatic as opposed to critical rhythms. Rhythm is flowing and multi-dimensional. Chaos meets rhythm between two milieus, in a space which Deleuze and Guattari termed chaosmos. It is there that chaos may metamorphose into rhythm. A territory is then not merely space, but rather an act that territorizes milieus and rhythms. The territorization factor (T-factor) is art by its nature. An artist only marks, signs unknown terrain and implants the border stones. Music is also just a discovered melodic landscape. The relationship between cosmos and music, according to Deleuze and Guattari, is not mechanical or mathematical in character, but rather rhythmic, machine-like. The essence of music is not in the macroscopic order of the heavenly cycles, but in the microscopic, molecular sphere of transversal becoming. The pulsations across music and the world are not measurable repetitions of the same, but ametrical rhythms of the unmeasurable and uneven. Musical refrains have sacred relationships with territories and in essence resemble bird song. The music of people is a form of becoming and its deterritorization is just one of the manifestations of a general process moving into and through space.

The musician Palacký enters the digital landscape decomposed by the visual artist Cenek with an intention to deterritorialize refrains in it. The viewer-listener is ushered into chaosmos and is perplexed by the unusual space-time organization of the visuality that governs it. He reaches for the aural crutches offered by the musician and starts to move in a landscape that is no longer strange. What does it matter that Shanghai looks and sounds different, that fish seem to swim against time, that their bodies are deformed and they move unnaturally... Are technical images not imagination just as well. Every medium has its advantages and disadvantages, the most important thing is not to become a slave to the medium and convention. Flawlessness and perfectionalism are mere boring ballast today, hence the nostalgia for the imperfection of the analog media at a time of post-digital reproduction and simulation. It was this nostalgia that spawned the aesthetic of mistakes and errors. In Czech art intermedia and multimedia a balanced level of the solution to the relationship between sound and vision is still a rarity, not to speak of a suitable context into which this synthesis is born. Carpets and Curtains by Ivan Palacký and Filip Cenek (or VJ Věra Lukášová, if he insists) is such an exception and definitely deserves not to remain the only one.
