— Lenka Szőnyiová (in: Videografická estetika v současném českém umění, 2005)

The static picture of Sun City shows successively dawning and awakening in time, the duration of the transition between night and day in relationship. The mental picture, absorbing the figurehead in its entirety, is constructed by passing time at a given while (luminescent moments). The story is a time in itself. — Lenka Szőnyiová (in: Videografická estetika v současném českém umění, 2005)

Užívání i výslovná tematizace animace v současném umění jsou motivovány zájmem o zkoumání předpokladů fungování soudobé společnosti spektáklu. V přiznaně konstruovaném světě animovaných filmů lze totiž lépe než v klasickém filmu či videu odhalit základní výstavbové principy těchto médií i způsoby jejich vlivu na diváka. Zvláštní pozornost je přitom věnována konstrukci času a stabilitě vizuálního světa. Dobře je to patrné ve zdánlivě formální lekci video-animace Solaris (2003) Filipa Cenka a Jiřího Havlíčka. Ve zhruba dvouminutovém filmu sledujeme rozednívání nad Slunečním městem. Nejprve zcela setmělá silueta se postupně probouzí se začátkem zvukové stopy, synchronizované s rozsvícením prvního okna jedné z budov. Umělé světlo z pokojů i hudba nabírá na intenzitě, aby spolu s příchodem denního světla, provázeného vysokými tóny hudebního doprovodu, zase opadla. — Karel Císař (in: Věci, o kterých s nikým nemluvím, Agite/Fra, 2010)

The application and explicit thematization of animation in contemporary art are motivated by an interest in studying the preconditions for the functioning of the contemporary spectacle-driven society. The admittedly construed world of animated films is better poised, than traditional film or video, to reveal the basic construction principles of those media and ways they influence the viewer. Special attention is paid to the construction of time and the stability of the visual world. It can be clearly seen in the seemingly formal lecture of the video-animation Solaris (2003) by Filip Cenek and Jiří Havlíček. In a roughly two minute film we observe the dawn above Sun City. At first, the completely dark silhouette gradually awakens with the beginning of the sound track, synchronized with the lighting of the first window in one of the buildings. The artificial light from the rooms and music grow in intensity only to drop down again with the arrival of daylight accompanied by the high tones of the musical accompaniment. A full dawn created in the studio unveils the city as a static model built from boxes linked by power cables. The real time of the record is made doubtful at the last moment by an animated sequence of a passing model car. A characteristic feature is the thematizing of the transition state which is almost unrecognizably incorporated into the dissolve where the animated model of the car leaves the shot before it can physically drive away. — Karel Císař (in: Věci, o kterých s nikým nemluvím, Agite/Fra, 2010)
